Your EPUB and cover picture are rebuilt by JavaScript in this page. No request this page makes carries the file, its name, title, author or contents. The requests it does make:

  • This site’s own files: page, stylesheet, script and fonts. No CDN or font service.
  • Anonymous usage events to this site, such as “a book was loaded”: a random visitor id kept in your browser, the page address, where you came from, the event name and a short detail (EPUB version 2 or 3, cover found or not, a size range like “under 1 MB”, the screen size you picked). Never the file name, title, author, contents or exact size.
  • Google Analytics (GA4), loaded from googletagmanager.com, gets the same event names and short details plus the usual page information such as the page address and your browser. Google Analytics never receives your ebook file, its file name, title, author or contents.
  • Cloudflare hosts this site and may count visits with its own traffic statistics.
  • Contact form and checkout, only if you use them: the contact form never sends your ebook file. It sends only what you type into it (your message and optional email). Checkout sends only the email you type.

Fix a blank, wrong or badly cropped cover

On a small e-ink screen a cover is the first thing you see in your library, and on many readers it is also the picture shown while the device sleeps. Books from free libraries, converted files and self-made EPUBs often arrive with no cover, with the wrong one, or with black borders around the picture.

This page, on epubcoverchanger.site, is an EPUB cover changer for ordinary readers. You do not need desktop software. It works with books you copy to a Kindle, Kobo or other e-reader, and with reading apps on a phone or tablet. You can use it without installing Calibre or any other program.

How it works

  1. Choose your .epub file. The tool reads the title, the author and the current cover, and tells you if something looks wrong, such as a cover entry pointing to a missing file.
  2. Pick the new cover. Upload a JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF, choose a screen size, and move and zoom the picture until it looks right. No picture? Make a text cover from the title and author in one of six styles.
  3. Download. You get “your book (new cover).epub”. Copy it to your reader. Short tips for doing that appear right after the download.

What changes inside the book

An EPUB is a zip file. The tool changes as little as possible:

  • The cover image is replaced with a baseline JPEG (the most widely supported kind). If the old cover was a PNG, the new file gets a .jpg name and every reference is updated, so the file never claims to be something it is not.
  • The book’s metadata gets exactly one cover entry, and on EPUB 3 the cover-image flag sits on exactly that one image.
  • If the book has a cover page, it points to the new image. If it has none, a minimal cover page is added as the first page.
  • All other files are copied across unchanged and in the same order, and the book’s identifier is left alone.

If you want the details for a book without a cover, read how to add a cover to an EPUB.

Screen sizes

The presets match common screens: 6-inch e-reader 1072×1448; 6.8–7 inch e-reader 1264×1680; Small 4.3-inch reader 480×800; Store standard 1600×2560, or keep the picture’s own size. The right size depends on the screen, and a cover with the wrong shape is cropped or padded by the reader. Which size to choose.

This tool vs Calibre vs Sigil for changing an EPUB cover

Three ways to change the cover of an EPUB. The cells for this tool come from how it works; the cells for Calibre and Sigil come from their own pages, listed under the table. A dash (—) means we could not confirm it from an official page.

Tested with EPUBCheck

The EPUBs this tool writes are checked with EPUBCheck, the W3C’s EPUB validator. In our own test run on October 23, 2026, 14 sample EPUBs rewritten by this tool, and a second rewrite of each, all passed EPUBCheck 5.4.0 with 0 errors and 0 warnings. That covers our samples, not every book.

Questions and answers

How do I change the cover of an EPUB without Calibre?

Open this page, choose your .epub file, choose a new picture (or make a text cover) and press download. The file is edited in your browser, so there is nothing to install. You get the same book with a new cover inside it.

Why does my EPUB cover show blank on my e-reader?

Usually the book does not tell the reader which image is the cover, or it points to a file that is missing. Readers then show a blank or generic cover. This tool finds the problem, lists it, and writes a proper cover entry. If the new cover still does not appear, the reader may be showing a cached thumbnail: remove the book and add it again.

Can I add a cover image to an EPUB online?

Yes, right here. The file is processed in your browser, not uploaded: your EPUB and your picture never leave your device. It works for books that have no cover at all and for books that need a new one.

What size should an EPUB cover be?

A cover with a 1:1.6 shape such as 1600×2560 pixels is a common store standard. For a 6-inch e-reader 1072×1448 matches the screen, for a 6.8–7 inch reader 1264×1680, and for a small 4.3-inch reader 480×800. The presets in the tool set these for you. Full size table.

Should I use Calibre or this tool to change an EPUB cover?

Use this tool when you only want a new cover and would rather not install anything; use Calibre if you also manage a library, edit metadata or convert formats. Both are free for the basic job. The comparison table of this tool, Calibre and Sigil sets them side by side.

Is this the same as epubcoverchanger.com?

No. EPUB Cover Changer (.site) is a separate site at epubcoverchanger.site. Not affiliated with epubcoverchanger.com or coverchanger.com.

Will changing the cover break my book?

No. Only the cover image, the few lines that point to it and, if the book had none, a small cover page are changed. Every other file in the book is copied unchanged, and the result is checked against the EPUB standard in our tests.

Does it work with DRM-protected books?

No. Books protected by DRM are encrypted, and we cannot change them and we do not remove DRM. The tool detects this and stops with a message instead of producing a broken file.

What happens to my file? Is it uploaded?

It is not uploaded. The EPUB is opened and rewritten by code running in your own browser. We count anonymous events such as “a book was loaded”, never file names, titles or contents.

What is the batch pack?

Changing one book at a time is free with no limit. The Library Pack ($2.99 one time) is for doing a whole folder or library at once, including text covers for books without a cover, and downloading the result as one zip. See pricing.
